Why Put Our Own Site in the Portfolio

Every web designer says they can get you on Google. The fair question is whether their own site shows up when you search for what they do. Ours does. Search “Baltimore web developer” and this site is the first organic result, directly under the map listings and above Indeed, LinkedIn and Thumbtack. You don’t have to take our word for any of it; you’re already looking at the work.

It’s also the hardest client we have. A web design business lives or dies by its own website, so everything we recommend to clients gets tried here first: the page structure, the pricing approach, the online checkout, the speed work. If something doesn’t pull its weight, it comes out.

The Goal

The goal was specific: rank #1 in Baltimore for the phrase a business owner types when they want a local developer, and turn those visitors into paying clients without a sales team in the middle.

That search is crowded. Job boards, freelancer marketplaces and directory sites with enormous budgets all compete for it, alongside every agency in the region that wants Baltimore clients. We held our own site to the standard we hold every client build to: no paid ads propping it up, no shortcuts that could get it penalized later, just a site good enough that Google would rather show it than anything else. If we couldn’t do that for ourselves, we had no business promising it to anyone else.

The Result

On October 12, 2026, at 1:51 in the morning, an incognito search for “baltimore web developer” showed this site as the #1 organic result. The screenshot below is from that search, cropped to the organic results.

The climb wasn’t a straight line, and it rarely is. Rankings move around on the way up, sometimes sharply, the same way they did for Baltimore Courier. Knowing what to do during that stretch, and just as important what to leave alone, is part of what we bring to every launch. Owners who start changing everything at the first drop often throw away the ranking they were about to get.

What It’s Built On

The site is written in code, not assembled in a page builder or stitched together from plugins. It’s hosted on a fast global network, so pages load quickly wherever the reader is, and every record, signed document and payment is handled by the system we built for it.

What matters to a customer is the result. There are no plugins to update, no theme that breaks when the platform changes and no monthly fees for a dozen add-ons stitched together. Every feature on the site, from the quote form to the checkout to the back office, was built for this business and does exactly what it needs to do. Client sites are built the same way and handed over the same way: the domain in your name, the code and content yours.

What Made the Difference

Built for How Baltimore Searches. Every page was planned around what Baltimore business owners actually look for when they need a website, and written for those readers instead of a generic audience anywhere in the country.

Real Writing on Every Page. The industry and town pages were written one at a time, each built on what is actually different about that trade or that part of the county. Google is very good at spotting pages that swap a town name into the same paragraph, and it buries them.

Fast on Every Phone. In Google’s own PageSpeed Insights test the site scores 100 for SEO, 100 for Best Practices, 100 for Performance on desktop and 98 on mobile. There are no page-builder plugins and no third-party chat widgets slowing it down.

The rest of the method is the part clients hire us for, and it’s the same work we’ll do on your site. What we can show you is the result: the #1 spot, held while the site keeps growing.

How a Visitor Becomes a Client

Ranking only matters if the visit turns into business, so every page gives a visitor three ways forward and lets them pick. The phone number sits in the header on every page and dials with one tap on a phone. The consultation button opens a short form right on the page, without sending anyone somewhere else, and the request arrives in the back office with the page it came from, so we know whether someone was reading about law firm websites or about pricing before they reached out. And for the visitor who already knows what they want, Order Your Website Online takes them straight to checkout.

Analytics shows which pages people read before they call, book or order, and every consultation request records the page it came from. That tells us which page to write next, the same way we decide what to build next for clients on our Growth plan.

What We’ve Built Since Reaching #1

Reaching the top spot was the start, not the finish line. Since October 12 we’ve kept adding pages the same way a Growth plan client would: a much deeper Baltimore web design page aimed at the next big search, nationwide pages for small businesses in Florida, Connecticut and Washington, and new articles in our resources section answering the questions business owners ask before they hire anyone. Each new page widens the range of searches the site shows up for.

That steady work is what keeps a ranking. Sites that launch and then sit untouched tend to slide as competitors keep publishing. Ours keeps growing every week, and so do the sites of clients who stay with us.

Published Prices & Online Checkout

Most web design firms make you fill out a form and wait for a callback to find out what a site costs. We publish every package price on the pricing page and let customers order online, which almost no one else in Baltimore does.

The checkout works like this. The customer picks a package and, if they want one, a monthly plan. They read and sign the order agreement right on the screen, then pay the deposit (or the full price for a Starter Site) by card through Stripe. If they chose a monthly plan, the card is saved so billing starts at launch, not before. Coupons work at checkout too. Every order lands in our back office, where we review it and accept it before any work starts.

For a client, that means a buyer who’s ready at 11 p.m. can say yes at 11 p.m. The same checkout can be built into any business that sells a defined service.

The Back Office Behind the Site

The public pages are the part you see. Behind them is a full business system we built and run ourselves, behind an owner-only login protected by a password and a six-digit code from an authenticator app.

Leads & Outreach. Every prospect is a record that moves through a pipeline, from first contact to meeting to signed, with every email, reply and next step in one place. Follow-ups go out on schedule and stop the moment someone replies, and opt-outs are honored automatically.

Reaching New Businesses Early. New businesses come into the system on their own, so a company that just opened its doors hears from us while it’s still deciding who to hire.

Inbox & Consultations. Replies are read straight from the mailbox and attached to the right lead. Consultation requests from the site land in the same place, with everything the customer typed.

Contracts With Built-In E-Signing. Agreements are filled in from the client’s record and sent as a link. The client signs on screen, and the system records the time, the device and a fingerprint of the exact document they signed, under the federal ESIGN Act and Maryland’s electronic transactions law. We countersign, and both sides get a signed PDF with a certificate page. No outside signing service, no monthly fee for one.

Invoices, Payments & Plans. Branded invoices with a Pay Now button, receipts sent automatically and monthly plans billed as subscriptions. Signing a contract creates the first invoice on its own.

Projects. Once a client signs, the project is tracked from kickoff to launch, with their documents, payments and account notes in one place.

The same lead engine also powers The Morning Leads, our lead system for service businesses, and the permit lead system we built for a portable restroom company in South Florida. When a client tells us they need booking, quoting, dispatch or payments built into their site, this is the kind of system we’re talking about, and it’s already running every day. See custom web development for what that can look like for your business.

Not a One-Time Result

One #1 ranking could be luck. Four in a row is a pattern. Before this site, we took Baltimore Courier to the top of Google for “Baltimore courier,” and it went on to rank #1 for “Baltimore legal courier” and top two for “Baltimore title courier” as well. The Maryland Drone Company reached #1 for “Maryland drone company” and took the top spot in the map listings as well.

The test that matters most to a client came in West Palm Beach, Florida, a metro crowded with national portable restroom chains. We built Restrooms on The Go a 49-page site that went live about a week after the first conversation, and it took the #1 organic result for “porta potty rentals west palm beach,” plus the second and third spots. We did that from Baltimore, about a thousand miles away, without ever visiting the yard.

Four different industries, four different kinds of customers, two states, and the same outcome every time. A law office ordering a court filing, a facility manager pricing a roof inspection, a contractor who needs restrooms on a job site by Monday and a business owner looking for a developer all search differently, and each site was built for the person on the other end of that search. That’s the track record behind every build we take on, and it’s why we tell clients plainly: give us the time and we’ll get you there.

What This Means for Your Site

Nothing on this site was built for show. The same structure, writing standards and speed work go into every client build, and the same back-office tools are available when a business needs more than a brochure. We’ve already proven the method on our own business, on The Maryland Drone Company and on Restrooms on The Go in West Palm Beach.

If you already have a website, we start by looking at it the way we look at our own: how fast it loads on a phone, how clearly it says what you do and where, and what’s standing between it and page one. Most of the time the fixes are clear within the first conversation, and you’ll know exactly what we’d change and why before you spend a dollar.
